Alright so ive gotten a few asks since I mentioned that trickster mode has existed in-comic for a while from confused fans who didn’t actually know that! I suppose if you came later, you wouldn’t. Homestuck has enough AUs that it wouldn’t seem strange for Trickster to be one of them.

But Trickster mode has been canon in comic since [S] You There. Boy. which was released on June 13th, 2009. So here is a post with a history of Trickster Modes in Homestuck, for your own reference.

Also for your own reference I am LITERALLY getting all of this information on the Trickster Mode article on the Homestuck Wikia. I am only writing about the actual trickster modes though, not Dave’s secret songs or anything that is minor like in [S] Act 4 ==> or when trying to activate Trickster Mode elicits small responses.

  • Trickster mode first appears in [S] You There. Boy. It can be engaged by pressing CTRL + T, as can all further Trickster Modes. This was hidden on the side of the hunk of earth that John’s house resides on.

  • Upon entering Trickster Mode, the Kernelsprite is swapped for the floating head of Andrew Hussie and John’s trickster mode. John himself is placed under the floor and is blurred from view. The background music is also changed to ”Harlequin”. Hidden in the Backyard is access to the Problem Sleuth’s Office (which can be accessed via the chimney) as well as a window with a pumpkin spray painted beneath it. There is also a notice in the top right corner which reads “Gankro Was Not Here”, which is upside-down. In the grass by this window is the “Trickster Code” written in Morse Code.

  • Trickster Mode next appears in [S] Get Up John, This is No Time For Slumber. In this flash, once you access trickster mode you are asked for a “Trickster Code.”

  • The Trickster Code is 024913, translated from Morse Code in the previous Trickster Mode. Upon entering Trickster Mode, John dons a Link attire complete with the Master Sword and Hylian Shield. A Kernelsprite also appears, who looks similar to Guru-Guru, the man in the Kakariko Windmill. The Shale Impis exchanged for a recursive John monstrosity, a “Johnstrosity”, if you will.

  • The next main event of Trickster Mode comes in [S] Past Karkat: Wake Up. When activated, Trickster Mode will cause a picture of a strange female John to appear (a John version of Vriska), and a variant of Totaka’s Song will start to play.

  • The active character will then be transported with a Chrono Trigger “Gate” effect to the Jidoor Relic shop (from Final Fantasy VI). Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poofrom Earthbound are at the side and Gamzee is dancing behind the counter of the shop. Interacting with Gamzee activates a sound test mode that allows one to hear twelve songs, including some used directly in the flash and others added only as a special feature. After leaving the room, the characters will continue to be transported with the Chrono Trigger gate effect whenever they use a Transportalizer. Activating Trickster Mode again will undo this effect.

  • Trickster Mode next appears in [S] John: Enter Village.

  • When activated in the mushroom farm area, a prompt with the phrase “pap:nak ::” appears. If one correctly finishes the analogy with “shoosh:doof” (the first appearance of shoosh pap in the comic), John mystically turns into Dave, drawn in the style of pixel artist Paul Robertson. Holding down the spacebar fills up his “Mangrit Vial.” When the spacebar is released, Dave performs an attack which can be used to temporarily trap the imp in time.

  • Next of course we have [S] Kanaya: Return To The Core. Similar to Alterniabound, pressing Ctrl+T teleportalizes you to exactly the same room, only with Sollux standing around thrusting in his battle animation (from the same flash) instead of Gamzee dancing. In addition he only has one song, Heir Conditioning. The NPCs in the area complain about only having one song, and miss the clown. Pressing Ctrl+T teleportalizes you back to the game, with the music for whatever character you were.

  • Next we have the first time Trickster Mode is confirmed to be at least somewhat canon. While not a trickster mode in itself, in [S] Terezi: Read Note, Terezi falls through a trap door and lands in the FF6 shop, and a mashup of music from Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger begins to play. This shows the room that was formally only for Trickster mode to exist in canon.

  • The next time we see anything relating to trickster mode comes with Calliope’s drawing of Roxy’s Trickster Mode, and then of course, [S] Jane: Engage. This is the first time that a Trickster version of a character has been seen outside of the easter egg trickster modes.

So there you have it. I hope this prompts some of the newer fans who were unaware of this to go back and play some interactive flashes, because they’re fun! And I hope this also informs people about tricksters and how long they’ve been around, because hey, it’s been a long while now! Tricksters have been around nearly as long as Homestuck itself.
